International Bugis Diaspora Convention 2011

International Bugis Diaspora Convention 2011
bridging the gap between physical dispersion and heritage resilience
25th to 27th November 2011
FAB. Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Johor Bahru. Johor. Malaysia

Bugis Diaspora Conference would like to bring together academicians, practitioners and individuals from diversified disciplines to meet, share and debate about Bugis heritage. Bugis is still one of the single most influential ethnic group in Proto-Malay world which disperse all around Malay Archipelago and Pacific Islands since 15th century.
The significance of Bugis Heritage would be their extraordinary ability to survive through the centuries amidst its geographical fragmentation and adapt to diversified local socio culture (Ammarell, 2002).
Bugis migrants assimilated with existing locals’ elites in their adopted homes, which led to social revolution in Malay proto-states hierarchy of major kingdoms around South East Asian and Asia Pacific islands countries (Caldwell, 1995).
This conference would like to question how heritage resilience happened even when they were physically fragmented for centuries?
Today, Bugis heritage is deep rooted in their political, social structure, traditions, cultural values, dialect, lifestyle, settlement layout and architecture. Historians, anthropologist, or researchers about ethnography, linguistic, etymology, sociology, Asian studies, religious studies, geography, urbanism, architecture and even fine arts are encourage to participate. Bugis descendents and general public are welcome to attend and hopefully share about their Bugis roots.
Given the complexity of inter-disciplinary fields that exist within a complex framework in Bugis heritage resilence, the division between all these areas were classified to 3 main focus (as below) to discuss in the conference;
History / Sejarah
Culture / Budaya
Architecture / Senibina
“The Bugis are high-spirited people: they will not bear ill-usage…They are fond of adventures, emigration, and capable of undertaking the most dangerous enterprises.” (Forrest, 2010)
